Coachella always marks the first taste of summer, and as if perfectly on cue, we’ve got our first pool party of the year tomorrow at the Standard Downtown Rooftop. The temperatures are heating up, our favorite songs are starting to take on that bouncy summer vibe, and the clothes are starting to come off. This week’s ‘On Repeat’ reflects all this. Pull out your sunglasses, put the headphones on, and imagine the good life.

Fabian – 2AM

Binary’s own Fabian is playing the aforementioned pool party, and as a treat I’d thought we’d share his disco treat “2AM”. A touch of retro style mixed with that modern flair that only Fabian seems to be able to deliver. Pop this one on watch everyone start to nod their head with a smile on their faces. It’s the soundtrack to the pool party of my dreams.

Disco feelin right, the music’s tight!

frank ocean - novacane

Frank Ocean, the most pop ready act from OFWGKTA is one artist that seems to be bringing back R&B in a big way. If you look at the buzz that he and The Weeknd are getting, its not a stretch to imagine a male R&B revival. Going back to last year Drake’s full length, which should never be considered a rap record, I’ve noticed a huge shift towards making earnest songs with mellow, dreamy production. In a lot of ways this stuff is very dreamwave, which is probably why I like it so much, and why it definitely belongs on this blog.

Love me now, when I’m gone love me none

01. Love Birds (Original Mix) by Moonchild

Of all the growing crowd of french sample house producers out there, Moonchild is the guy that has my favorite disco guitar tone. Especially on this track the guitar cuts through the mix and actually drives the song. Its great. This song is equal parts dreamy and bouncy and its been playing in my car for weeks. The song sounds like the coolest girl in the room. She’s always got a smile on her face, she’ll slay you with one wink, and she can probably drink you under the table too.

Moullinex – Catalina

Pool parties always end up being marathon affairs, and there always seems to be a few hours in the middle where everyone’s gotten pretty drunk and things start to get hazy. You always make new friends during this stretch, and generally it feels like the music just turns into one long song. “Catalina” by Moullinex is that song. In a perfectly baeleric way, this song slowly morphs and builds, creating a soundscape that is undeniably summer. I love this track and I hope I hear it tomorrow.

D/A/D – Stranger In A Strange Land

D/A/D is LA native Zach Robinson. I discovered this tune on his bandcamp and I’ve been haunted by it ever since. I find his chord progression genius, it sounds very natural and human, unlike a lot of soundtracky sounding electronic stuff. The guitar work is subtle and effective, and I’m left feeling a bit more lonely. As I often say, a song that can make me feel bad wins everyday over a song that doesn’t make me feel at all.

Holy Ghost! – Wait And See (Flight Facilities Remix)

Perhaps you’ve picked up the Holy Ghost! record yet. If you haven’t, you should. Its the best piece of pop music masked as disco that I’ve heard in a year. Hold On, a song that was universally praised sounds dated and almost juvenile compared with the rest of the record. The boys grew up and wrote a really fantastic record. They picked a fantastic first single in “Wait And See”, and this Flight Facilities remix retains everything thats great from the original, even the chords, but adds their unique flair. The bass work is exceptional and its hard not to want to hear this about 5 times a day.

I guess I’ll have to wait. I guess I’ll have to wait and see.
