Binary Entertainment, established in February of 2008 by Los Angeles transplants Josh Legg and Kyle Petersen, is a full service music company aimed at providing a flexible business model that can quickly adjust to the modern artist’s ever-changing needs. Structured primarily as a music management company, Binary operates with publishing, promotion, and record divisions as well, giving it’s artists a wide range of services.
By September of ‘08, Binary had signed seven Los Angeles based artists. The seven artists, Alfa, Fabian, Keenhouse, LexiconDon, NightWaves, Short Circuit, and The Kids Are Radioactive, all operate within LA’s ever growing dance music scene. All seven artists are first and foremost songwriters and producers, unlike the DJ centric dance scene in Southern California. Binary’s mission is to bring the song back to the dancefloor, harkening back to the days of artists like the The Pet Shop Boys, New Order, and Depeche Mode. Taking inspiration from their childhood in the 1980’s, Binary’s 7 artists branch from there, together painting a portrait of Los Angeles in the 2000s, from the gritty back alleys of downtown, to the sun kissed waves of the Pacific. Unified by the goal to write great songs, the styles range from the heavy distorted tones of Fabian and The Kids Are Radioactive, to the Binary coined dreamwave sounds of Keenhouse, NightWaves, and LexiconDon, who’s synth laden pop conjur images of romantic tropical settings and neon trimmed avenues.
Throughout the course of 2009, Binary has established itself as a tastemaking entity, spreading its own brand of dance pop and dreamwave music both through live concerts and its blog, located at wearebinary.com. Binary has brought some of the brightest stars in dance music to Los Angeles for their debut shows. Concerts with The Twelves, Anoraak, College, Futurecop!, Miami Horror, Bag Raiders, and Thieves Like Us have branded Binary as a local fan favorite.
2009 has also seen Binary artists’ break into the international scene with record releases. Keenhouse’s release ‘Civic Transit’ was released on Sunlinxx Records to critical acclaim, URB calling it, “A balanced synthesis of retro-futurism… Civic Transit is a well-crafted album worth a glance.” Alfa’s debut single LA Passion was released through System Recordings in August, leaving a mark with his own interpretation of LA’s darker electro underbelly. Later, September marked the debut release from Binary founder’s Legg and Petersen’s own group, NightWaves. UK label People in The Sky (Friendly Fires, Plugs) released She’s Electric on September 7th. Creamteam described the record as, “Sounding like the bastard dreamwave child of the Black Kids, it’s hard not to smile and shuffle your feet to She’s Electric.” NightWaves has appeared on the best selling charts on beatport’s indie/dance section and amazon.com’s disco section, as well as recently making an appearance on hypem.com’s most blogged about artists of.
“Binary Presents: LA Lights”, to be released October 13th, marks the first release on Binary Entertainment’s record division. The introductory offering from Binary Records features two tracks each from their seven artists. While the tempo varies from song to song, the album is threaded together with a unifying desire to capture the essence of Los Angeles. With several eclectic releases planned for 2010, Binary Presents: LA Lights serves as an electrifying sample of what the future holds for these dreamwave pioneers.
